It is a play of great intensity, at times comic, and with a consistently fast-paced dramatic rhythm. Massimo Popolizio creates a Don Quixote who is determined, energetic, visionary and realistic all at once. Cervantes’ famous novel comes to life in a theatrical adaptation that explores the dreams of the knight-errant Don Quixote. Between reality and fantasy, the protagonist and his trusty squire Sancho Panza navigate a world where imagination clashes with harsh reality, giving rise to a constant interplay between dream and illusion. Don Quixote describes the tragicomic adventures of a Spanish hidalgo (that is, a member of the minor nobility), who identifies with the figures of chivalric romances and thus becomes Don Quixote. Cervantes’s work, which blends elements of the chivalric tradition (from the Chanson de Roland to the poems of Boiardo, Ariosto and Tasso) and the chanson de geste, aspects of the picaresque novel, and characteristics of romances and successful chivalric novels, is considered one of the most important works in world literature.
