Reading the fable of Cupid and Psyche can reveal all its incredible depth and simplicity, the richness of this gem, its mystery, its “meaning”: the attraction to the divine (God), the thirst for knowledge, the persistent search for the “sacred” that has been present in humanity throughout the ages. But one approaches the divine with humility, with faith. There is a need for that shift in perspective, that erasure of the already known, which has always been recounted in the ‘fall-conversion-ascension’ fairy tales. Trials as a shift in inner orientation, a change of course. The desire for greater awareness (which, being opposed, constitutes in itself a further trial): “I want to see… I want to know… I want to understand…” says Psyche.
Only after the fall, having plummeted to the furthest distance from the place that constitutes the ultimate goal, will the gaze, the knowledge, be able to perceive and unite, merging with God. The Immense. The Ineffable.
